It is important to remember that excessive head movement is generally the effect of poor body rotation, any discussion about head movement in the golf swing must also take into account the movement of the spine. The two, after all, are attached. If the spine angle you establish at address should change appreciably during the swing, you head position will obviously move in tandem with it, resulting in compensations having to be made in order to hit the ball solidly.
Head movement can be classified in any one, or any combination, of the following ways.
- From side to side,
- Up and down, and
- Towards and away from the ball to target line.
In a good swing you usually see a bit of side to side movement and, occasionally, a little evidence of up and down movement. A small amount of movement is, in fact, perfectly acceptable.
