Golfing Tips to Prevent Slicing
ByIf your golf shots are flying right in a banana shaped arc away from the target, instead of straight to the target, then you are hitting golf slices. To avoid getting more frustrated rather than refreshed when you play golf, here are the basic tips to fixing your slice shots:
Work on Finding the Best Grip For You
Most golf shot corrections start with some type of grip adjustments. First of all, although there is a standard description of what the right golf grip should look like, there are small or minor personal and unique adjustments that golfers make on their golf grips that improve their golf shots.
Hence, a grip that produces long and accurate shots for one golfer may produce slice and hook shots in another golfer. So your first task to improving your game is to find the best grip for you that will help you avoid hitting slice and hook shots.
The basic proper golf grip is described this way: the thumb of the leading hand (left hand for right-handed people) should be across the length the shaft of the golf club. The line seen between the thumb and index finger should be pointing toward the golfer’s right eye. The grip should also be flexible yet firm.
If the leading hand is positioned too far on the left of the golf shaft, this will turn the club face open which will cause the ball to be hit from the outside-in, which will result in a golf slice.
Golf Drill to Fix Slice Shots: Standing Back Drill
Move farther back from the ball and swing your golf club from this position. Swinging in this awkward position will help you hit the ball squarely. This will also help build muscle memory on hitting the ball squarely.
You can also move your trailing foot (or right foot for right-handed people) a foot backwards. Next, swing the golf club from this position. You will not be able to hit the ball from the outside-in from this position.
Stop Trying to Kill the Ball
To gain better control of your swing and increase the accuracy of your golf shots, avoid over-hitting. You can train yourself to stop trying to kill the ball by doing more short shots.
And to shoot more straight shots, it is important to keep the elbow of your trailing arm close to your body when you swing the golf club.
Also, keep a mental image of a straight line passing through the golf ball to the location target. This mental image will help guide your body when performing the golf swing.
Correcting and defeating the golf slice is a rite of passage that every golfer goes through. So don’t sell your golf clubs just yet, implement these simple tips to fix your golf slice and enjoy playing a higher and more rewarding level of golf.
